Inspired by the iconic depiction of Halley's Comet in the Bayeux Tapestry, which comes to London this autumn, this 3-hour workshop invites you to recreate this remarkable moment in Goldwork embroidery. Celebrate one of history's most famous celestial events with Hand & Lock's Halley's Comet Goldwork Taster. Perfect for complete beginners and those new to Goldwork, this relaxed and inspiring class introduces the traditional techniques. Under the guidance of our expert tutors, you'll learn how to combine essing, chipping, pearl purl, and beading to bring your comet alive.

Techniques & Breakdown

This celestial taster class offers a wonderful introduction to the art of Goldwork embroidery, teaching you a selection of traditional techniques inspired by the tail of Halley's Comet. Our expert tutors will guide you through the fundamentals of metal thread embroidery, demonstrating how to apply pearl purl, create elegant flowing lines with essing, add rich texture with chipping, and incorporate beading to bring sparkle and movement to your design. Each technique will be demonstrated live by our experienced embroidery specialists, who will provide personalised guidance and support throughout the session. By the end of the class, you'll have gained confidence in these core Goldwork techniques creating your own beautifully embroidered comet inspired by one of the Bayeux Tapestry's most iconic motifs.

Bullions (colours of your choice) 

Yellow Gutermann’s 

Base fabric of your choice 

Anchor thread or stranded cotton of your choice 

Red seed beads

Beeswax block
